Over the budget

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Last Monday, my sister and I along with Hazel went grocery shopping. I told myself that I will limit the number of grocery items to the necessities only and will not go over budget this time around. I always find myself buying so many things for the kitchen that I go beyond my grocery budget every single time I go to the supermarket.

But guess what? I still went beyond my budget! Not because I bought unnecessary things. It’s because prices of commodities have gone up! Or maybe I didn’t notice it the last time? I was shocked to find that so many of the usual things I buy for the pantry are now more expensive than before. Even the disposable diapers are just too costly now. We buy one for Hazel for when she goes to sleep at night and one for my grandma (incontinence).

It’s really time for me to earn more. Time to make that big decision tonight!

Know the right people

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

It pays to know the right people. I have friends in different business industries. I got to know them in the course of my work. Some, I keep in touch with until now that I’m no longer in the corporate world. Some, I call from time to time to check on things. One of those people I know managed to hook me up with an insurance agent who gave me a really nice deal on an auto insurance that my cousin needs.

There was also one instance where another cousin who had a construction business needed help with their tax problems. I was able to talk to someone I know from the tax agency and I was able to get the person’s help to clear my cousin’s tax problems.

It really does pay to know the right people, don’t you think?

Laptop problems

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

I have problems with my laptop. Thank goodness I bought a desktop a few months after I bought the laptop, so I have an alternative to use while the latter was acting up. I tried to do a defrag of my laptop as well as a full virus and spyware scan. Everything seems fine. I am using it right now, testing if it will slow down again.

And it seems I really need to have my laptop reformatted. It really slows down after an hour or so of using it. I think a virus managed to slip past my AVG. My friend told me that I should use another anti-virus because according to an IT expert she knows, AVG is the low quality kind. I don’t know but I am happy with this AV of mine until this problem with my laptop.

Oh well, time to go to Tim’s house and ask a favor from her brother-in-law hehe

Sleep and me

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

adjustablebedSleep is such a luxury to me these days. My brother is already in college and expenses have been steadily increasing for us. I have to earn more than usual so I am awake most of the time, working hard to earn more than enough for us. I am supporting my brother’s college education as well as most expenses at home. I’m not complaining. Everything’s fine with me. Because in turn, my family’s been very supportive of me every step of the way.

Anyway, that’s why sleep has been scarce for me lately. I’ve been thinking of replacing my old bed with a sleep number bed because according to my friend, this one’s sooo much better! It will really be a good sleeping experience for me. Without the backaches and neck cramps and all that.

I don’t fall asleep easily. I always have to read a book first because my mind won’t stop running. So my siblings know that when I do fall asleep, they should never wake me up if it’s not really important. Otherwise, they’ll see a monster waking up from hybernation.

Too many on her plate

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

My sister, Grace, who teaches in a Chinese school in Manila has one frustration in life. That’s to play piano. She’s always wanted to learn how to play but with her hectic schedule, it’s just not possible for now. She just might keel over from too much work and other stuff she’s involved in at the moment.

You see, my sister has this tendency to take on so many things all at once. There was even a time in the past year that she hardly ever slept because of her dedication to her work. She’d have so many on her plate that she got sick for a time early this year. When I accompanied her for a medical check-up, the doctor ruled it was overfatigue. She’s so stressed out from work that it’s manifesting in so many ways in her body. Imagine, the doctor advised her to kick off her shoes and relax for at least a month. Watch movies, have fun with friends, go out of town.

Thus, playing the piano will have to take a backseat for now. Soon, when her load becomes lighter.

Gone too soon

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

As always, when I hear about a death, I feel extremely saddened for those love ones left behind. Just like in the case of Michael Jackson’s death. He left three kids behind. Aged 7, 11 and 12, his kids are said to be taken cared of by Michael’s mom, Katherine, for the meantime.

I can say that my siblings and I are “lucky” my mom passed away when we are already old enough to take care of ourselves. I don’t think the kids Michael will be leaving behind can already take care of themselves, despite the fact that a family lawyer told the press that the kids are well-trained. They’ve known only one parent and have been with him all their lives. Who would replace him?

Life can be cruel at times. Death brings so much grief in a person’s life, sometimes even causing trauma that will last for years and years.

I hope that the kids will be taken in by a relative who would really love them and care for them with or without the Jacko’s money. And I hope Katherine is the one.

Sleepy me =(

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

I feel like all I do these days is go to sleep. I am so darn sleepy all the time! Even with the hot weather, you can find me in deep slumber. I also don’t feel like writing that much for almost a week now. Pasumpung-sumpong. That’s why you seldom see updates these days. Hay.

I think I need to tinker with a blog’s theme for some inspiration :)

Newly weds

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

I know that a friend of mine who recently got married is planning to take his wife to a vacation abroad. It will be a honeymoon of sorts for them because they didn’t get a proper one due to schedule problems. He’s planning on a late August vacation because that’s the time when the budget presentation is almost over and he would be free to take a vacation leave.

Lucky for them because there is an Accor Hotels City Super Sale! For a limited time only, travelers can book their hotel stays at Accor Hotels for discounted rates. He can book their stay online from June 23 to 29 so that he can avail of the discounted hotel rates. Travel time will be between July 10 and September 20, 2009. Imagine hotel rates starting as low as $25! This will surely fit in my friend’s budget and the travel time frame to his schedule.

The Accor Hotels City Super Sale is happening across 10 countries of the Asia Pacific Region. I know that my friend is planning on a Sydney honeymoon. This is a great opportunity not just for them but also for other travelers out there. If you are interested, I should tell you that this is for a limited time only. So hurry and take advantage of this super sale from Accor Hotels!

School girl

nins

Remember my Weekend Snapshot post about Hazel not going to school for now because of the A(H1N1) virus spreading around? Well, my decision was overruled by her mom’s and she’s now going to a daycare two streets away for 2 hours every day. We have to respect her mom’s wishes even though we are worried silly every day what with the influenza plus the dengue scare. Hopefully, no harm will come to our little girl.

Birthday treat

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

It has been a long-time plan of mine to go to Singapore and explore the country. I love the city! I’ve seen so many tourism shows about it and have been planning to go with a friend a few years ago. Sadly, it didn’t materialize because I had to prioritize family over leisure. But with the Accor Hotels City Super Sale that I read about, I believe the Singapore adventure I’ve been meaning to experience will now happen within the year.

My birthday is on August 3. I am actually thinking of booking a 3-night stay from August 1-4. I will take a city tour for Day 1. On the second day, I plan to do some serious shopping and food trip! And on the 3rd day, I will just immerse myself more with the city. It would be a birthday treat for me!

And do you know what the ultimate treat here? Hotel rates are being reduced on this Super Sale of Accor Hotels! That includes Accor Hotels in Singapore! I will be booking my stay online before June 29 so that I can avail of the discount. Travelers like me can book their stays between July 10 to September 30, 2009 to take advantage of the super sale.

Now, if this isn’t a birthday treat, I don’t know what is! Singapore, here I come! You can visit the web site for more information. Hurry! This super sale is for a limited time only!

WS: Happy Dad's Day to all!

dadninin

That’s my dad with Hazel. This photo was not taken this weekend but was shot last October 2008 inside the church. Since it’s Father’s Day today, I thought I would post a photo of my dad. But then I hesitated posting a photo of him facing the camera because he might not like it hehe. Thus, this photo :)
We celebrated Father’s Day last week, confused with the priests’ blessings and greetings. Since today is the real Father’s Day, there will be a celebration again consisting of a special lunch and some cake and ice cream to make it a bit festive.

How about you, what are your plans to celebrate Dad’s Day today?

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there!
;)

This way to exit

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

So where’s the exit? This way! Just look for the exit signs and you will know the way.

You know what? I’ve always said that time and again, we don’t know when an emergency will happen. That’s why being prepared all the time and alert in any given situation is very important. My sister sent a text message yesterday that a fire broke out at the building in front of theirs. I immediately called her up to ask her what the situation was. She said that six floors of the building in front of them was burning since three in the afternoon and it all started at the restaurant at the ground floor. I told her that she should go home already and not wait for anything else. She said that we need not worry because they just had a fire drill and are very much aware of the situation. She was actually looking at the Exit Sign right in front of the door to her office while talking to me. You know, just in case something similar happens to their building, she knows where the fire exit is.

EXIT SIGNS are very important. These signs will guide people in emergency situations. Elevators can’t be used during emergencies like earthquakes and fire. The only means of getting out of a building during situations like that is through the fire exit. Which are normally put in corners of any given floor. To make it visible to people, exit signs that are lighted are put at the top of the door leading to the fire escape.

If you are a building administrator and in need of exit signs, I suggest you go to Energy Star and know more about the legalities involving exit signs. Check out what you really need. Go visit EnergyStar.gov now for more information on these lighted signs.
